Male Bisexuality
There have been and still are multiple definitions of bisexuality and they have changed over time. One of the earliest, declares that it means being able to be aroused by both genders. Some researchers only accepted a person as being bisexual if their test subject’s genitals responded to images of both genders. Not every bisexual’s equipment responds that way. I know people who only get aroused when they are in a relationship. That can be true for both men and women. Most current definitions of bisexuality allow for the option of emotional attachment/interest without any physical arousal or activity.
In 1948, Kinsey expressed the idea that sexuality can be boxed into a spectrum of 0 to 6. The categories listed below give you a way to think about where you might fit in.
0 Exclusively heterosexual
1 Predominantly heterosexual, only incidentally homosexual
2 Predominantly heterosexual, but more than incidentally homosexual
3 Equally heterosexual and homosexual
4 Predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally heterosexual
5 Predominantly homosexual, only incidentally heterosexual
6 Exclusively homosexual
X No socio-sexual contacts or reactions
It might also be possible to think about a spectrum of one to one hundred with one being totally heterosexual and one hundred totally gay. That provides a large range of where you might decide that you belong. For those who are not at the ends of the spectrum, it is even possible for your position on the scale to change from day to day. On Monday you might feel a greater need to be with your own gender and on Tuesday have a desire to be with the opposite gender. The following week might be focused completely on your own gender. In the end, it doesn’t really matter. A label is only good if it helps you be truer to yourself about who you are. Never take on a sexual label to make someone else comfortable.
In all societies, people identify themselves as heterosexual more often than any other sexual label. That has led some cultures to determine that that is what is normal. That would be the same as declaring brown eyes are normal because they occur most often. The minute that you understand yourself to be something other than heterosexual, you become a member of a minority group, but that would also be true if you had an IQ of 160! Being in a minority can be a very good thing.
Some people realize that they are not heterosexual in early childhood. Some figure it out during teenage years. There are also those who repress any non-heterosexual urges. For some of those people, they repress who they are to fit into the society and to be part of a typical male and female relationship. In those groups where religion or the state frown on non-heterosexual activity, it might be essential to blend in. Your livelihood or even your life may depend upon staying under the radar. The stronger the religion in an area the more hidden are the non-heterosexual people. That is one of the reasons that most ways of identifying the bisexual population are likely inaccurate.
In many countries, same gender partners can’t adopt children or use surrogates to create a nuclear family. That has led many people to establish a male and female relationship for the purpose of having children. It’s not uncommon for the non-heterosexual to keep sexual identity unknown to the other partner. Some have very long marriages with one partner completely unaware of the other’s unspoken needs. A small percentage of marriages get stronger when the partner opens up, but more commonly the opening results in a dissolution of the marriage.
A curiosity about the same gender seems to arise more commonly in men than in women in one’s 40’s and 50’s. In some cases, this is the result of menopausal changes in women who may find sex painful or undesirable leaving the male partner to seek satisfaction elsewhere. For some men, it seems less like infidelity to be with a man than to be with another woman. The term hetroflexual can be used to describe a man who is mostly straight but doesn’t care if the warm mouth on his genitals is male or female. An orgasm is an orgasm.
There also seems to be a group of post-menopausal women who become sexually adventurous and become more open to being with another woman or a bisexual man. Once the door to non-heterosexual activity is open, the range of options becomes broader and for many more satisfying. In some cases, the only way to know if you like something is to give it a try. For others, the entire idea of being with one’s same gender is just revolting and no experimenting is required.
In a basic way, the biological sexual needs of the genders are quite different. Since the female will have the burden of child birth and often child rearing, there is a need to choose a partner who will provide good genetic material, but also be likely to stay and help with supporting and nurturing the offspring. For the male, it is desirable to mate with more than one partner to provide a better probability of his DNA being able to be passed down through multiple generations. This has also been expressed as, “To have sex, a woman needs a relationship while a man just needs a warm hole.”
